CHALLENGE: Create a video for ROBOT RADIO that captures its lofi, throwback vibe.

The Tito Deville Band pretty much gave us free rein for their video — with one specific request. They didn’t want the same old, same old “walking through a party” video that seems to have infected the entire music video scene as of late. They wanted something different, something that would represent their sound and the essence of their song. They wanted  something creative and original. Something fresh.

We found inspiration from a Nintendo Powerglove discovered at a pawnshop. With that, we developed a concept that borrowing heavily from childhood nostalgia just like the references dropped in the song: the outfits (picked out by the amazing Beau Muncer) and Delorean are callbacks to Back to the Future, the Powerglove from the Fred Savage classic, The Wizard, the cheesy lightning effects from 80s sci-fi comedies like Weird Science.

With the help of master choreographer Jojo Zolina and his troupe of dancers from the Harbour Dance Centre along with pro cinematography by Mark Hemstock, we planned an elaborate shoot with warehouse/story scenes and a whole dance sequence staged to the Konami Code. Unfortunately, a string of setbacks, bad weather and a slew of other problems left us without a set for the story portions and rain for all our outdoor scenes. Out of options, we ran an audible day-of shoot, gutted the story parts and shot everything underneath the Cambie Bridge. Happily enough, things did turn up relatively well after some serious editing, heavy colouring and some creative FX work by Stephen Shevchuk.

Hope you enjoy the video as much as we did making it.
